In the digital world we live in there seems to be no shortage of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts. The messaging is always redundant – offering you their “unique” understanding of the latest algorithms and a promise to get you on the first page of Google.

The problem is these strategies are like fads. They create a boom and bust cycle. The result is that one week you’re ranking high and then the algorithm changes and you disappear.

From there, you’ll either catch it and question your SEO consultant or they might propose a new plan of action to put you back on the first page again.

The IT team at Google is smart. They closely monitor what’s happening and modify their ranking factors on a regular basis.

At one point, this meant an adjustment to the ranking algorithm daily!

The truth is, you have a business to run, you can’t keep up with all of these changes, you’d be setting yourself up to fail. The task isn’t impossible as long as you’re not chasing after the next shiny object in SEO.

So how do you achieve and maintain top search engine ranking?

By getting back to the basics:

  • Make the most of your social media toolbox by taking advantage of your Google My Business Page (GMB). Utilize every section of this asset and be sure to include photos relevant to your business, make posts at least weekly, and display your “products.”
  • Create and implement a link building strategy. Apply your strategy to your blog posts and other relevant  industry posts.
  • Create a YouTube page for your business and post quality video content at least on a monthly basis.

What is “quality video content?”  Quality Video Content is a series of short (3 minutes or less) very specific interviews, product demonstrations, customer reviews, etc.

  • Create a website and related landing pages that follow the most recent best practices.  Use proper keywords and well crafted text that is congruent with your business.  Do not “stuff” keywords.
  • Update your site with excellent content on a regular basis.
  • Make sure your site is “mobile optimized,” that is, it displays correctly for the 70% of searches that are done today using smartphones.

After doing everything suggested above will this strategy instantly propel you to page one rankings?  In short, no. But it will allow you to rise up through the multitude of competing sites to a top page rank over time.

By properly analyzing keywords that are relevant to your customers, and utilizing them regularly in a disciplined way that focuses on the basics, you will avoid the boom and bust cycle of chasing the latest SEO fads.
